Henri Matisse Art

Henri Matisse (1869-1954), a French artist, known for his use of color to convey emotional expression, and his fluid, direct and original painting style. As a printmaker, but principally as a painter, Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the 20th century. Although he was initially labeled as a Fauve, by the 1920s, he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

Early in his career, he was the leader of the Fauvist ("wild beast") movement, a painting style which focused on pure colors used in an aggressive and direct manner. His style changed many times over the years, but he never gave up his art. Matisse continued creating even into his 80's. This was the time when he created the paper cutouts that he is perhaps best known for. Matisse understood perfectly the relationship between color and shape, a talent which rightfully earned him the name "master of color". As a leader of the Fauves, he believed the arrangement of colors was as important as a painting's subject matter to communicate meaning. He avoided detail, instead using bright color and strong lines to create a sense of movement.

Matisse's work reflects a number of influences: the decorative quality of eastern art, the stylized forms of the masks and sculpture of Africa, the bright colors of the French impressionists, and the simplified forms of French artist Cezanne and the cubists.

Although intellectually sophisticated, Matisse always emphasized the importance of instinct and intuition in the production of a work of art (hence predating the Abstract Expressionism). He argued that an artist did not have complete control over color and form; instead, colors, shapes, and lines would come to dictate to the sensitive artist how they might be employed in relation to one another. He often emphasized his joy in abandoning himself to the play of the forces of color and design, and he explained the rhythmic, but distorted, forms of many of his figures in terms of the working out of a total pictorial harmony.

Unlike many other artists, he was internationally popular during his lifetime, enjoying the favor of collectors and art critics. Henri Matisse is often regarded as one of the most important French painters of all time.
