Raphael Art
Raphael or Raffaello Sanzio (April 6, 1483, Urbino,
Italy - April 6, 1520, Rome, Italy), an Italian High Renaissance painter and architect of the Florentine school,
celebrated for the perfection and grace of his art, his
mastery of dynamic composition and movement. By his artistic means
Raphael has achieved constant movement throughout his
paintings, without letting it become restless or unbalanced. Just as
Michelangelo reached the highest peak in the mastery of the human
body, Raphael was seen to have accomplished what the older generation
had striven so hard to achieve: the perfect and harmonious composition
of freely moving figures.
"While we may term other works paintings, those of Raphael are living things - the flesh palpitates, the breath comes and goes, every organ lives, life pulsates everywhere." - Vasari, Lives of the Artists.
Raphael, like Michelangelo and Da Vinci, is one of the most famous artists of Italy's High Renaissance and one of the greatest influences in the history of Western art. Immensely talented, he first studied with his father and then as an assistant to the great master Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino. Raphael worked in Florence (1504) and earned a reputation as a productive and much-admired painter before going to Rome sometime after 1508. In Rome he was commissioned by Pope Julius II to create the large-scale fresco The School of Athens, his most known work, as well as other decorative work at the Vatican.
The frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura are probably his greatest work. The School of Athens is a complex and magnificently ordered allegory of secular knowledge showing Greek philosophers in an architectural setting. The Madonnas he painted in Rome show him turning away from his earlier work's serenity to emphasize movement and grandeur, partly under Michelangelo's High Renaissance influence. The Sistine Madonna (1513) shows the richness of colour and new boldness of compositional invention typical of his Roman period.
Raphael's work is often cited for its harmony and balance of composition, and his early death (on his 37th birthday) is considered by many experts to be one of the great tragedies of art history. At his request, Raphael was buried in the Pantheon in Rome.
Though he died at 37, Raphael's example as a paragon of classicism dominated the academic tradition of European painting until the mid-19th century.
