Claude Monet Art
Monet, Claude Oscar (November 14, 1840, Paris - December 5,
1926, Giverny), French painter, is generally considered to be the most
outstanding figure among Impressionists. The term Impressionism
derives from his picture Impression: Sunrise. A title was
needed in a hurry for the catalogue of the exhibition in 1874. Monet
suggested simply Impression, and the catalogue editor, Renoir's
brother Edouard, added an explanatory Sunrise. This had given
the entire movement its name.
Monet took his paints and canvases into the field to paint directly from nature. He wanted to capture the momentary effects of color and light in his paintings. He created several series of paintings, in which he painted the same subject (a cathedral, haystacks, etc.) many times to capture the effects of sunlight and the seasons.
Monet loved to paint nature and landscapes, but also liked painting people in beautiful surroundings. He was using a short brush strokes, which often looked rather like spots of paint, not lines. Often, when you looked at his painting from a short distance you couldn't see what it was, but if you stepped away you could see a beautiful scene. This was a completely new way of painting that became the mark of Impressionism.
By the time he was in his 50s, Monet was a successful and prosperous artist. It was during this period that he produced numerous versions of his famous Waterlilies. He also produced series of paintings depicting the same scene, like Rouen Cathedral, at various times of day. His intention was to portray the different atmosphere engendered by the light at different times of day.
The artist's home in Giverny is a mecca for flower and art lovers. Flowers, color, and light are essential elements in interior decorating. Filled with the bright, clear colors of nature, this home is a must-see for anyone who loves art, flowers, color, or decorating. It is especially remarkable because the usual decorating of the day included heavy curtains, large velvet upholstered pieces, and dark, somber interiors.
"Everyone discusses my artwork and pretends to understand, when it is simply necessary to love." - Claude Monet.
"You must know I'm entirely absorbed in my work. These landscapes of water and reflections have become an obsession. It's quite beyond my powers at my age, and yet I want to succeed at expressing what I feel." - Claude Monet.
In his final years Monet was troubled by failing eyesight, but he painted until the end. He was enormously prolific and many major galleries have examples of his work. Through his life Monet painted about 2500 paintings.
He died December 5, 1926 and is buried in the Giverny church cemetery.
In 2004, London, the Parliament, Effects of Sun in the Fog (Le Parlement, Effet de Brouillard) (1904), sold for over $ 20,000,000.00.
