William Bouguereau Art

William-Adolphe Bouguereau (November 30, 1825, La Rochelle, France - August 19, 1905, La Rochelle, France), a French academic painter. In his own time, Bouguereau was considered to be one of the greatest painters in the world. In 1900, his contemporaries Degas and Monet reportedly named him as most likely to be remembered as the greatest 19th-century French painter. Bouguereau's works were eagerly bought, at high prices, especially by American millionaires. Although he fell into disregard in the early 20th century, due perhaps to his opposition to the Impressionists, there is a new appreciation for his work. In his lifetime, Bouguereau painted over 700 paintings.

His work was characterized by a highly finished, technically impeccable realism and a sentimental interpretation of his subject matter. Bouguereau paintings look professional, very skilful, and almost real. He masterfully brought together the elements of exquisite drawing, incredible coloration and perspective, and brilliant modeling and compositions. Like many painters of the second half of the 19th century, Bouguereau made a careful study of form and technique and steeped himself in classical painting. True to his serious and industrious nature, he worked deliberately and industriously: before beginning a painting he would master the history of his subject and complete numerous sketches.

"Each day I go to my studio full of joy; in the evening when obliged to stop because of darkness I can scarcely wait for the morning to come... My work is not only a pleasure, it has become a necessity. No matter how many other things I have in my life, if I cannot give myself to my dear painting I am miserable."

The tenderness with which he portrayed children and domestic scenes, his technical skill and passion for the classics, and his love of rich color are hallmarks of Bouguereau's exquisite paintings. There can be little doubt that Bouguereau was one of the most talented painters of his time.

Artist William Bouguereau is legendary for his contributions to 19th century painting. His polished, refined technique and his sophisticated style represented the height of achievement in the French academic art tradition.

"One has to seek beauty and truth, Sir! As I always say to my pupils, you have to work to the finish. There's only one kind of painting. It is the painting that presents the eye with perfection, the kind of beautiful and impeccable enamel you find in Veronese and Titian."
